This Little Light

Shine bright and beautiful

One of my fondest memories of church growing up was preparing for the annual children’s church program, it was always very intense preparing for it. We would start preparations months before, we would memorize bible verses, prepare for sword drills, and the ultimate ‘survival of the fittest’ (which is usually the most dramatic part on the actual day of the program). And let’s not forget the songs, dance and drama. One year the theme was LIGHT and I remember singing this song- This Little Light Of Mine. It was a straightforward song to learn compared to the others we had on the song arrangement that year.  I remembered this song while having a conversation with a couple of people. The conversation was about the state of the world and what our response should be. It is no news that the state of the world at the moment is quite chaotic, from economic inflation to wars, gender issues to abortion, corruption on the rise, and from one craze to another. The world keeps getting darker and darker.

I wouldn’t blame anyone for saying ‘There’s nothing I can do’ and ignore everything as long as it doesn’t affect you.  I would too but then here’s what the word of the Lord says;

“Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you. Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭60‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The glory of the Lord rises to shine on you, meaning it’s not your glory but the Lord’s. The world getting darker is no excuse for us to cower in fear and only be bothered when it affects us but rather an opportunity for us to reveal Jesus. Don’t limit your mind to only praying for others, it goes beyond that. It is a call to rise and stand for that which is right and pleasing to God. Even in our communities, there are opportunities for us to be LIGHT. Being the light of the world is not only for our own homes, friends, and family but for everyone and everywhere. It can be as little as a word of encouragement and as great as implementing initiatives for development, however great or little, your light can go a long way to brighten up every corner of the world and set others as beacons of light as well.

You have been equipped for good works not by your ability but by the spirit of the Lord. The Father has made every provision for you to shine bright, so don’t be afraid. Wherever it is you find yourself, remember that you have enough light in you to brighten up the world. Go on, be bold, and shine the Light of God because his glory rises upon you.

Light doesn’t belong in bright places but in dark places.

Cheers

Ishioma.
